EWING, NJ – Shortstop Tim Barnshaw had a RBI single in the 10th inning that scored the winning run for Rowan University in a 6-4 victory over The College of New Jersey on Friday.
Barnshaw (so. Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) drove in first baseman Rob Ritterson (jr. Sewell, NJ/George Washington (PA)) who led off with a double. The Profs also had a sacrifice bunt by second baseman David Lenig (fr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) that brought Barnshaw home for the final score.
Barnshaw finished the game with three hits (four at bats), three RBIs and one run scored. Left hander Joe Cichy (jr. Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) went the distance on the mound for his fourth victory. Cichy (4-2) recorded six strikeouts. Third baseman Tom Ready (so. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) contributed with two hits (five at bats) and one RBI.
TCNJ tied the score at four with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Third baseman Matt Zonies (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) singled and later crossed home plate on an error. Center fielder Dave Mebs (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored the tying run on left fielder Jeff Botti’s (sr. Avenel, NJ/Colonia) sacrifice fly.
Mebs went two for two with two runs scored. Catcher Gerard Haran (sr. Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge) had two hits (four at bats) and one was a solo home run. First baseman Blake Bullis (sr. Delran, NJ/Delran) added two hits in four trips to the plate.
Rowan improves to 11-9 overall and 3-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The College of New Jersey has a record of 14-7 and a 2-3 conference mark.
The Profs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Right fielder Dan Krause (jr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) reached base on a fielder’s choice and left fielder Brian McLaughlin (sr. In the top of the fifth, Ready singled in a run. Haran led off with a solo home run in the bottom half. Both teams scored one run in the sixth and Rowan was ahead 4-2. Barnshaw recorded his second RBI with a single. Mebs got on base with a single and later scored on a ground out by shortstop Jeff Toth (so. Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.).
Rowan is returns home against Kean University on Saturday, April 7 in a noon conference doubleheader.
